If you consider yourself an aspiring saucier – and when it comes to barbecue sauces, you’ve tried every one you’ve ever seen – then Fat Matt’s needs to be your next stop. Even with all that past sauce tasting, you’ll soon find your feet under Fat Matt’s table at least once a month. Theirs is a well-balanced blend of sweet and spicy, and their cooks are long-time experts at roasting their varieties and cuts of meats (chicken, brisket, pork, and of course ribs) to the perfect amount of tenderness. Their options for side items are also fittingly southern and delicious (Brunswick Stew, anybody?), and their Sweet Potato Pie was so good that Georgia natives have been known to cry with joy upon taking their first bites.
Sitting happily between Midtown and Buckhead, Fat Matt’s can conjure up a bit of a line (especially on the weekends), but if you don’t mind waiting, they’re very affordable ($10-15 for dinner), and they have a steady lineup of rather talented, live blues musicians playing every single night.
